Hewlett-Packard layoffs?
Hewlett-Packard layoffs?
My dad is a database administrator for Hewlett-Packard. I was just wondering how the recent announcement that with the acquirement of EDS, they will be cutting 24,000 jobs worldwide will affect his job, and how close EDS is to database administrating. Thanks for any help and info.

I believe that when your dad took up to IT, he was willing to work on project basis instead of settling for a lifetime in a job. IT is like construction - unsteady in its pace, and draws near to a completion any time. My advice is not to settle in any IT company for longer time than you see a higher step you can go up to. Finish a project, get moving if you are not moved into another better one at a better position. EDS is good at dba, but their main focus is Mainframe, as far as I know. If your dad is good at dba, why not move over to some db company like Oracle or some RDBMS Training Centres? His experience can help him and others to a great extent. My suggestion for all IT guys - don't depend on the company. Just finish your project and keep moving on till you have gained good knowledge of the business - once you have enough knowledge, take up projects on your own, build your own team of young professionals and use your experience for institution building. You won't be disappointed.

Hewlett Packard Windows 7 - Wordpad?
Hewlett Packard Windows 7 - Wordpad?
Wordpad is Hewlett Packard's version of Microsoft Word. Unbelievably, it doesn't appear to have a spell-check. Is that really the case, or have I somehow failed to activate it?

wordpad actually comes will all windows, it's Mircosoft word you have to buy. Wordpad doesn't have spellcheck unless something has change between yesterday and today.
2 :
Wordpad is MICROSOFT'S CHEAP version of Word. It doesn't have a spellchecker or many other things that Word has. Open Office http://www.openoffice.org/ Writer is free and has a spellchecker.
3 :
Wordpad belongs to Microsoft. It's packaged in their Windows as a free program. No, it doesn't come with spell check. There are several 3d party software programs that you can download to run with Wordpad to give it spellcheck capabilities. Below is an example. I have NO idea if this program is good......I just found it doing a Yahoo search for 3d party software for you. http://spellex.com/Products/spxa/default.htm
4 :
Word pad doesn`t have spell check, you`re thinking of Microsoft office. If you don`t want to buy office download open office, it`s free, is compatible with microsoft office and has spell check.
5 :
Wordpad comes directly from Microsoft -- HP has nothing to do with it. Wordpad was the successor to Notepad -- a straight text editor with no pretensions to being a word processor. Wordpad really isn't much better. Yes, it does not have a spell check -- or about 95% of the other features Word has. It barely qualifies as a word processor, mostly because it has text formatting and word wrap. Beyond that, pffffft! Sorry.

504 MB of Ram will barely run windows Vista if thats what it came with
2 :
It's pretty good, I would probably think about upgrading the RAM though. 1GB should be good.
3 :
If by "new" you mean brand spankin' new, in the box, never been opened, then no. Not good. If you mean "new to you", then it is OK. Windows XP will run just "OK". Some versions of Linux will run "great!".
4 :
Not really, The more ram the better You need at least 2 gigs for vista. A pentinum 4 was good In it's day, But not in the days of duo or quad core processors.

Technically both. Both computers do the exact same thing. Basically you pay for a brand name. The hardware and software run the same. Perosnally I find a computer which you build yourself to be more reliable than any brand name computer.

Hewlett Packard's Windows XP Home Edition
default Gateway's username and password for Hewlett Packard's Windows XP Home Edition?
My manufacturer is Hewlett Packard. I try to access to my default gateway, which I can access to by typing http://192.168.1.1 into my firefox, but it asks me for my username and password and I don't know what it is. Some people say it's always admin for both, or blank for username and admin for the password. But either way, I type it and it keeps saying "401 Authorization Required". Which means I got it wrong. Someone help me with this please? Thank you

Defauly gateway is your router. Default username / pwd depends on the manufacturer of your router. Since you have not posted that information, I'd suggest try following combinations. One of them should work. Username: admin / Password: admin Username: admin / Password: blank Username: admin / Password: password
3 :
ok what you want to do is find the reset button. don't just press it and release. hold it down for at least 10 seconds or even 30 seconds. this should do a hard reset on your router back to factory default. then the password and name is as it came from the factory. user name: admin / password: admin user name: admin / password: password user name: admin / password:
4 :
It depends upon your router, not your computer. Give us the make and model of your router and maybe we can help. The make of your 'puter is meaningless. Many Linksys routers use "admin" for the user name and no password.

Replacing a Hewlett Packard Keyboard?
Replacing a Hewlett Packard Keyboard?
I use Windows 98 on a HP 6470Z (10 years old). I need to replace the keyboard. It connects to a serial port (not USB). My question is, does the keyboard use a driver? If I replace it with a different kind of keyboard, will I have to download a keyboard driver?

some do most dont

If you buy a new keyboard make sure it has the adaptor that has USB to serial. Yes you can use a USB keyboard with your 10year old machine, but just make sure it has that adaptor. If your keyboard has a lot of features and functions, for example buttons to control media player, then a driver should come with the keyboard for you to install. Or you can always go to the manufacturer's website and download the driver. It looks like this green adaptor: http://c1.neweggimages.com/NeweggImage/productimage/26-125-015-05.JPG

No she is not. Mark V. Hurd, Chairman, is the CEO and President of HP . Carly Fiorina was known as the former CEO (1999–2005) and Chairman of the Board (2000–2005) of Hewlett-Packard (HP). "On 9 February 2005, Carly Fiorina was dismissed as chairman and chief executive officer of HP. "While I regret the board and I have differences about how to execute HP's strategy, I respect their decision," Fiorina said in a statement. "HP is a great company and I wish all the people of HP much success in the future." She was replaced by Patricia C. I have a Pavillion a1610n. I have set up Limited User Acct. for Internet use. Sounds like you're using Microsoft Windows. Its buggy and just does that. Its been happening for years. There is nothing you can do to fix it. You can use an alternate operating system, such as Linux, but fixing Microsoft's OS bugs... thats something only Microsoft can do! If you're lucky, it could just be a virus or some other malware - this canbe cleaned out using your regular anti-virus software.
2 :
Try creating a different user account so that a new user profile is created as well. See if the same problems occur. If they do not than the current user account is linked to a corrupt profile.
3 :
the administrator has to grant you access t those programs

Can anyone tell me what's Hewlett Packard's
Can anyone tell me what's Hewlett Packard's "compressed schedule" workweek ?
I understand it's for boosting productivity :-)

Generally speaking, a compressed schedule workweek is where the normal 40-hour week is spread over less than the normal 5 days. How each company decides to implement this is different; some companies have you work 4 days at 10 hours a day, some have you do a "5/4/9" where you work 9 hours a day, 5 days one week and 4 days the next week. Check with the HR folks at HP to get their specifics. But it all comes down to working 40 hours in less than 5 days.

Just up the ram from 512mb to 1gb and you will be ok. However if you dont already have windows 7 you can get a better new pc with windows 7 installed for about the same price or a little bit more.

I've got an HP tablet pc. i'm a big supporter of HP and Sony. Great value, innovation, and durability.
2 :
I have an HP desktop and other than some spyware issues, it's held up for me. I've had it for 4 years and I can still add more memory if I want to boost performance.
3 :
I have an HP Pavilion 512w. I would suggest maybe a Dell. My advice would be to stay away from HP. I've had mine since 2002. It has a tendency to bog down and when you try to open a window, many times you get a not responding message. The only advantage to HP is the ability to do a destructive restore which will restore the computer back to the way it was in the box from the factory.

They're just as good as the other brands. It's all personal preference. Just make sure you get the most current model (if you can afford it). Don't let the sales folk try to sell you something that is priced too good to be true, because it's more than likely that the unit they are trying to sell you will be obsolete within a month or two. They're trying to move the old systems out the door. And you're stuck with an "already" old unit".

I bought a refurb HP a few years back. I used it for a couple years and sold it to my brother. It is still going. No problems. It has to be getting to be around 5 years old or maybe even older and it is still going strong. One bad thing about HP is they put a bunch of unecessary programs(bloatware) on your PC to begin with that takes a while to get rid of. Dell is a lot better as far as bloatware goes.

I have a HP 1430. A lot of people say bad things about hp's but i got mine about 2 years ago this thing has been through 3 moves and sat in an old car i was using for storage through the winter (many 30 below days) this thing still runs as good as it did the day i bought it. Also they are very upgrade friendly, everything isn't all smashed in in weird ways. The only problem Ive had is with getting motherboard drivers. Asus made the board specifically for hp and they don't offer the drivers if you ever have to wipe your computer. But i still have to say that the only way i wouldn't buy an hp again is if i built my own.

I have seven of then and no problem, they are as good as any other.

I at home have several HP's, Laptops 2, Desktop 2, Server 1. At work they use Dell's At the office I do IT Support they have HP and Gateway. This is my take. HP is by far the best on support online/phone, they have a website you can get drivers and updates for very old models, they give you the most for your money. I mean in parts like more HD space, more RAM, etc... Gateway is ok, but their going concern is at risk from what I heard. Dell, well I will never buy one because they are expensive compare to an HP and their support sucks. They give you less hd and other components. I would only look at their servers because they are cheaper and good compare to others.

with just that little amount of information it's hard to tell, but I would guess it's youre power supply. Check to see if the fan is working in the back of the computer.
2 :
my hp responds to violence. curse alot and threaten to hit it with a baseball bat.
3 :
you can fix it by going and buyin a dell pc. dell rocks !!!!
4 :
Is it displaying any message ? Without error message information its difficult to offer solution. What is the OS installed? What are the other main programs in your PC? Have you installed any utilities or performance improvement program? However you can try by doing the followings - 1. Uninstall all the programs you are not using. 2. Clean all the TEMP files. 3. Perform disk clean up 4. Run complete activities of Scandisk 5. Do thorough Disk De-fragmentation.
